Meet . . .Tom Low
Focus @ SRI:
The development of new medical devices, consumer products and technologies
Title:
Program Director, Innovative Product Engineering and Technologies
Day in the Life @ SRI:
Marketing and sales to commercial and government clients; reviewing and approving reports, proposals and technical documentation; leading a great team of engineers and scientists; helping the team meet client needs; troubleshooting technical issues; marketing; managing; growing my program. Then I break for lunch.
Before SRI:
Full-time student at the University of California at Berkeley, part-time hang gliding instructor
Academics:
B.S., mechanical engineering, UC Berkeley
M.S., mechanical engineering, Stanford University
Why SRI?:
Where else is one offered the opportunity to make such a difference? I thrive on the tremendous variety of challenges. It's great to be routinely exposed to so many brilliant people. You can't work here and not learn something new almost every day.
Inspiration (what motivates you):
Knowing that what we do with our minds today can have a profound impact on humankind for all of the future
Away from the Office:
Spending time with my wife and three kids. Flying airplanes, sailplanes and hang gliders. Outdoor activities like camping, skiing and hiking.
Languages:
A little French
Proudest Accomplishment:
I am incredibly proud of my three kids. I have completed building a Lancair experimental airplane, which is proving to be a lot of fun to fly. When I was younger, I was ranked third worldwide in freestyle (aerobatic) hang gliding. If the current project we are working on at SRI is successful, it will eclipse all my previous accomplishments (except my kids).
