Microbiology and Virology

SRI conducts a wide range of tests and studies for clients in the medical, environmental and industrial sectors. We provide antimicrobial screening support for the development of novel compounds, toxicity evaluations, screening of organisms for metabolites with biological activity, and other tests designed to meet clients’ particular needs.

Medical Applications

SRI is a leader in performing antimicrobial and antiviral assays with novel agents. These agents are tested against clinically important microorganisms exhibiting either a single- or multiple- antibiotic resistance pattern. This service is tremendously significant because of the increasing spread of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms and their threat to the effectiveness of currently available treatments for certain infectious diseases.

• Novel “cold” sterilization approaches for heat sensitive equipment and supplies
• Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) experiments in either test tubes, 96-well trays, or agar plates
• Antimicrobial testing of novel drugs to determine MIC against aerobic and anaerobic bacteria
• Quantitative toxicity tests with the establishment of survival curves
• Qualitative toxicity tests using agar plate spot tests
• Cell based antiviral drug screening assays for most BSL-2 and BSL-3 viruses

• Aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation of pollutants

• Bioburden monitoring of cleanrooms under GMP guidelines
• Small scale fermentation

We also offer Genetic and Molecular Toxicology.

Because all our laboratory facilities are self-contained and centrally located, we are able to provide short turnaround times for routine tests.
