John J. Young, Jr. Joins SRI Board of Directors

MENLO PARK, CA—September 18, 2009—SRI International, an independent, nonprofit research and development institute, announced today that John J. Young, Jr. has been elected to SRI's Board of Directors, effective September 1, 2009. Young will become the SRI Board's tenth member, joining a group that includes leaders from government, academia, and the business community.

"Throughout his career, John has been a champion of innovative and efficient business practices that respond to critical needs," said Samuel Armacost, SRI's Chairman of the Board. "We are very pleased to welcome John to SRI's Board of Directors and look forward to the important contributions he will make towards SRI's continued growth as a client-focused R&D organization."

Mr. Young recently completed service as the Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics, overseeing a $200 billion budget focused on research, development, procurement, and logistics programs. He previously served as the Director of Defense Research and Engineering (DDR&E) and as the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development, and Acquisition. In that role, Young was able to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of Navy and Marine Corps procurement and research programs and to control costs.

Mr. Young's earlier experience includes ten years as a senior staff member with the U.S. Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.

While at the Defense Department, Young received Distinguished Civilian Service awards from the Department of Defense, Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Army. He also received a Distinguished Public Service award from the Department of the Navy.

Mr. Young has a Master's degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University and a Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
